Going to see a to30 tomorrow. What should I look for

I'm going to see a to30 tomorrow, looking for a smaller machine for around the yard. It has a loader, plow, disc, brush hog. It needs a little work and far from new but starts and runs. What are some weak points I should look for? Any common issues or pricy repairs?

Well, the 30's Cont Z129 engine blocks are world famous for cracking between the sleeves, the cast iron was machined too thin for the larger sleeves to improve on the 120 cu.in.
So if there is no antifreeze in the engine oil, you should have no 'hidden' problems

Hopefully it will run good enough to drive it around a bit.

The TO30 didn't offer power steering, so the loader is going to be a real workout for driver and tractor.
Look for slop in the steering. That can be fixed, but give it a feel for ease of steering, will you be
willing to muscle it around? (Remember, with an attachment on the back it will steer easier).

Check the 3 point lift, be sure it raises and lowers smoothly. If it's jerky and slow going up, the pump
valves are bad, will need the pump repaired or rebuilt. If it comes down quickly with the clutch in or the
engine off, the lift cylinder will need attention.

The transmission will have water in it unless it's just been changed. Something they are known for, rain
water comes down around the shifter boot if it's bad. It usually doesn't really hurt them unless it's been
run that way for a long time, but no way of knowing the answer to that.

Look the engine over for coolant in the oil, freeze cracks, excess blow-by, low warm idle oil pressure, oil
smoke under load.

Remember, you are looking at a 60-65 year old piece of equipment... Unless it's already had a dose of TLC,
there will be problems, but they have as good a reputation as any, maybe a little better than most.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking for something a bit larger than my garden tractors, but smaller than my Oliver 77. I was looking at oliver 55's, when this came up for the right price. It's not in great shape, and wasn't running until recently when they replaced the fuel tank, rebuilt the carb, new generator, and a few other odd's and ends.
