Going to look at a 420 John Deere crawler with a winch. Owner did mention no second gear. Asking price is 5000.00. It's has sat for 4-5 years but he did get it running yesterday.

I would welcome any comments or suggestions about this machine.

Thanks

I have had 3/4 of those. for that price I wouldn't go look at it. two cylinder 22 horse power with absolutely no power other than first gear. those were made with a reverser and without one. only buy one with the reverser. motors seems to be there good point as there easy to maintain final drives are a weak point. not if you operate as it should be as the machine needs to be operated easy. final drive oil levels should be checked often. small machine so it is not hard to work on. 2nd gear out could be costly. it should have street pads. I would never buy on with cleat pads. can be very hard on the machine. to me the best thing it has is the winch as you don't find them with those to much. without more info its hard to say but 5000 for a machine that has tranny problems, hasn't ran for years I wouldn't waste my time. Like I said its a small machine that is very limited on what you can do with it if you operate it correctly. just my 3 cents worth.

You did not tell us what you intend to do with it. They are very small, not knowing what your needs are, you may want to buy yourself a decent sized skid loader.

Thanks, pinball. Just got back from looking at it. The guy that has it is a friend who runs a logging operation, sawmill, snowplowing etc. and a good, honest fellow. He bought it because his dad had one and just wanted to fool around with it but never has.

I'm buying it to do some minor clearing and because I collect old pieces of equipment, mostly tractors. His mechanic changed the oil, cleaned the carb and she fired right up. It runs and moves. He was mistaken about second gear, it's first that jumps out. I did extensive repairs once on a transmission in a JD 60 so it doesn't scare me a lot. I have run a machine shop for over 40 years so consider myself fairly mechanical.

I did think 5000.00 a tad much but my lawn mower chewed up 4000.00 and it's just a lawn mower. He's got the books with it so looks like it will be mine next week.

That's great. I just love seeing those at shows all fixed up. I do all my work myself so that's a big plus for you. Buying from some one you can trust I another big plus. just make sure you check the oil in the final drives. It seems up north that they were used a lot in logging. would be great for that. The motors if tuned right will start right up. The winch is a big plus. I had a scarifier I sold last fall for one. Regardless what anyone says if your happy then that's all that counts. Hope is al works out for you. Norm

That's a heck of a lot of money for a 420 unless the tracks and undercarriage are in great shape. If they are the original tracks, chances are they are quite worn by now. Tracks and undercarriage are everything on a crawler.
