i have 1939 allis b tractor
im looking for info on how the lite switch and relay work together
when the switch is off low charge, and when pulled out high charge? will the cut relay open when the the battery is fully charged.

also can a standard regulator be used instead of the cut out
switch and just use light switch for lights only?
thanks steve

Yo Donna, good questions, heres my answer.

1) When the switch is off low charge, and when pulled out high charge? will the cut relay open when the the battery is fully charged.

NO The Cutout Relay CLOSES once the tractor is running (so it can charge battery) PROVIDED THAT the genny is producing enough voltage to latch it in .........Then when you shut the tractor OFF it opens, since otherwise the battery would reverse discharge rapidly through the genny. I normaly use HIGH charge maybe an hour or so then go to LOW unless lights are on but that usually takes her to high charge anyway SUBJECT TO BATTERY AND GENNY and how long tractor runs etc etc

CUTOUT RELAY CLOSES IF RUNNING AND GENNY VOLTAGE IS HIGH ENOUGH, AND CLOSES WHEN TRACTOR SHUTS OFF

2) also can a standard regulator be used instead of the cut out???

YES it is possible to convert from a Low High Light Switch type of manual charge controller over to a full fledged Voltage Regulator (with correct voltage and ground) which also has the cutout relay inside it. Instead of the Gennys FLD wiring up to the light switch, it wires instead to the FLD terminal on a VR. Same as a cutout, BAT terminal on VR wires up to ammeter while GEN/ARM wires to the gennys ARM post. If it has a 3 brush adjustable genny, I set the brush to max high charge position. Always Polarize the genny before start up to be safe if you mess around a lot with the charging system.

YES light switch can just control lights if you convert to a VR

OOPS My Bad, youre right THANK YOU Ive probably typed that sentence a thousand times (and usually correct) over 15 years here lol

Let me try this again:

The Normally Open Cutout Relay CLOSES once running if the gennys voltage reaches a certain pre set level so it can be connected to and charge the battery...........But re OPENS when the tractor shuts down otherwise the battery would reverse discharge via the gennys armature...........

Whew you saved the day
